OUR HISTORY

In 1830 a group of Scottish Presbyterians organized the first congregation of this church holding services in a log school house at the corner of Mayfield Road and Dixie Road in the hamlet of Mayfield.

The first church was built on the present site in 1842 on land donated by Patrick and Mary Speirs.

The present building was erected in 1874 at a total cost of $2,860 and seated 225 people. It was built of red brick in the gothic style with stained glass in the gable windows. Since the 1980’s seven of these windows have been replaced by beautiful stained glass windows, in memory of loved ones, following the theme of “The Life of Christ.”

In 2005, as a 175th Anniversary Project and to commemorate “The Year of the Veteran,” the window on the south side of the vestibule was replaced.

In 1925 Mayfield entered into the union of Presbyterian, Methodist and Congregational Churches and became a charge of the United Church of Canada consisting of Inglewood, Cheltenham, Mayfield and Dixon’s. On June 30th, 1988 Mayfield officially became a one point charge and we hired our own minister.

An addition to the church was built in 1929 to better house the Sunday School, which up to that time had been held in a draughty, chilly hall above a section of the horse sheds behind the church. In 1959 another addition enlarged the Sunday School, church hall, kitchen area and added washrooms.

In 2012 the auditorium was again renovated. The stage was removed and a “Gathering Room” where small groups could meet and a large office for the secretary and the music director was built. An industrial dishwasher was installed in the kitchen and a new sound system with projector and screen was added for movie nights and meetings.

In 2023 the final two stained-glass windows were installed.

Attitudes, ideas and clothes change over the years but Mayfield Church has evolved since the 1830’s to the present. Our roots in faith are still deep, some of our founding families are still faithful members and some “Hints from 1910” still apply.

  •     Let every member for 1910 try and be present every Sabbath.
  •     Encourage your Pastor by your presence.
  •     You are welcome to all our services. Don't make yourself strange.
  •     Be friendly. Remember – he who would have friends must first show himself friendly.
  •     The rich and poor meet together – the Lord is maker of them all.
